Drug Giant Eli Lilly Will Now Push Monsanto's Controversial rBGH

This is a follow up of the previous post from last week. I thought that we had heard the last of rBGH. However I guess it is naive to assume that where there is profit to be made, even on a despised dangerous product, someone will be willing to make it. Just look to the tobacco industry for another example. What I don't understand is why Lilly would want a product which is banned in more places than it is allowed for sale? Is this some sort of ploy to make this stuff look safe and try to convince people that it has some sort of benefits? I guess we will just have to see how this story unfolds and find out if Lilly will be as persistent as Monsanto was at pushing this stuff on dairy farmers and pressing to pass legislation prohibiting the labeling of products which contain this terrifying concoction. Elanco Announces Acquisition of Posilac® Dairy Business

Deal Provides Strategic Fit with Lilly's Animal Health Division

Greenfield, IN - Elanco, a division of Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY), today announced that Lilly has signed an agreement to acquire the worldwide rights to the dairy cow supplement, Posilac® (sometribove), as well as the product's supporting operations, from Monsanto Company (NYSE:MON).   

"Global dairy demand is increasing, outstripping supply, and consumers are seeing rapidly rising prices," said Jeff Simmons, president, Elanco. "With the purchase of Posilac, Elanco can enhance its overall product portfolio and work together with the industry to provide dairy farmers more options and give consumers affordable choices. Critically, we remain focused on the health and care of the cow in working with farmers to increase global milk supply.

"With our rich history and experience in the dairy industry, Elanco is the ideal steward of this vital technology," Simmons said. "Elanco remains committed to using science to address the growing need for safe, affordable food; and to choices for consumers, retailers and producers."

Elanco has exclusively sold sometribove outside of the United States for a decade.  Posilac has been safely used for more than 14 years.

Under the terms of the agreement, Lilly will acquire all rights to the Posilac brand, as well as the product's U.S. sales force and its manufacturing facility in Augusta, Georgia. In return, Monsanto will receive a $300 million upfront payment, as well as contingent consideration. The Posilac dairy business manufacturing and sales teams will be integrated into the Elanco business. The transaction is expected to close near the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2008, contingent upon clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Anti-Trust Improvements Act and other customary closing conditions. Lilly confirmed that the acquisition will not result in a change to the company's full-year 2008 financial guidance, as detailed in its second quarter 2008 financial results press release issued July 24, 2008.

Monsanto getting rid of rBGH

Finally after so much consumer pressure and multiple retail outlets banning products with rBGH, there is hope insight for the end of this harmful chemical. For those of you who don't know what this is, rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone) is a genetically engineered variant of the natural growth hormone produced by cows. Manufactured by Monsanto, it is sold to dairy farmers under the trade name Posilac. Injection of this hormone forces cows to boost milk production by about 10%, while increasing the incidences of mastitis, lameness, and reproductive complications.

For years Monsanto has been lobbying state legislatures and departments of agriculture around the country to harass dairies that won't use Posilac and take away dairies' right to tell consumers they're rBGH-free. Hopefully this will now come to an end now that Monsanto has announced that it is selling its Posilac division that makes bovine growth hormone. (See Following story)

Now we just have to work towards bringing about more awareness of other GMO foods and educate people on their health risks.

St. Louis-based Monsanto announced today it is selling the division that produces bovine growth hormone, also known as rBGH or rBST.

There's no problem with the product, insists the company. During a conference call today, Monsanto's Chrissie Chavis told reporters that Posilac, as it's known commercially, is a "solid successful product of significant value to dairy farmers."

But nationwide a growing number of consumers and dairy processors feel otherwise. "No artificial growth hormones used" is now commonly displayed on store shelves from Florida to California.

The proposed sale, she said, allows the company to focus on genetically engineered seed. "Our long term growth platform is focused on corn, soybeans, cotton and vegetables. Repositioning the business would ensure that loyal dairy farmers could continue to receive the value of Posilac in their operations."

Posilac, is sold in an injectable form to an unknown number of dairy farmers in the U.S. and internationally. Monsanto refused to divulge sales figures, but insists that one-third of the nation's cows receive injections. The USDA estimates that number to be more in the range of 15 percent.

The dairy drug is now made at the company's Augusta, Georgia plant after production problems at its Austrian facility forced it to close earlier this year.

The sale would include the Augusta, Georgia plant facility. In the meantime it's "business as usual," said Chavis about whether operations there would cease.

Monsanto has no timeline for the sale and would not comment to *IB News* on any prospective buyers, though Chavis says the product could complement animal production or pharmaceutical companies.

Consumer surveys show that over the last decade, consumers have rejected buying milk from artificial hormone treated cows.

In the last several years, major retailers such as Safeway, Publix and Kroger have decided to ban the artificial hormone in their store-brand milk. Starbucks has refused to purchase dairy from treated cows at its 6,793 company-operated stores. Chipotle Mexican Grill, a McDonalds spinoff, has banned rBST in its company stores.

In January, Kraft Foods announced it would offer a line of cheese made with rBGH-free milk, despite assurances from the FDA that it is safe. Glanbia, a high-volume cheese production company in Idaho and New Mexico, will phase out the use of Posilac by next year. Dean Foods, the largest U.S. dairy company now offers a line of rBST-free products.

Recently agriculture officials around the country moved to limit labels on dairy products that disclosed whether they came from treated or untreated cows. In February, consumer pressure led to a reversal of a labeling prohibition in Pennsylvania.

Has pressure from consumers led to Monsanto's decision? Chavis denies it. "Our core focus is in the seeds and trace business. Since 1994 it's (Posilac) been a very strong product for us. We've sold more doses this year than we sold last year. We see significant opportunity in the future in the U.S. as well as the international markets."

The company plans to continue sales outside of the country, particularly Mexico and Brazil.

rBGH is approved for use in 20 countries, says the Monsanto spokesperson, although it is banned in all of Europe, Japan, Australia and other industrialized countries, with the exception of the U.S.

rBGH was approved by the FDA in November 1993 and marketed in February 1994. Studies show that milk from treated cows has an increased level of a spinoff hormone, IGF-1, which causes the cow to produce more milk. IGF-1 is identical in cows and humans, and studies show that it causes cells to proliferate, including cancerous cells.

The Cancer Prevention Coalition's Dr. Sam Epstein says that the IGF-1 from rBGH treated milk is "supercharged" and can lead to an increased number of cancers in humans. Consumers Union cites that elevated mastitis rates among treated cows leads to additional antibiotic treatment in the animal. Bacterial resistance to antibiotics "may pass into humans through milk, air, water or soil, or through ground meat", says Michael Hansen, a senior scientist with CU.

Terry Etherton, at Penn State University, says the growth of rBGH-free products is "part of a smoke-and-mirrors campaign" that means consumers are paying more for products of questionable value.

Chavis positioned the new face of Posilac as a "green" alternative for farmers. Studies at Cornell University, where Monsanto has funded dairy scientist Dale Bauman and his studies since the 1990s, show that the drug allows big savings in terms of feed and land.

"As the environmental pressure on agriculture gets greater, this allows dairy producers to produce more milk with less (sic) cows thereby reducing the overall carbon footprint of milk production," said Chavis.

Posilac was the first in a long line of genetically engineered products to be introduced by Monsanto, a former chemical company. Monsanto is increasingly focusing on buying seed companies and converting the industry to its own brand of genetically engineered seeds, where qualities of foreign plants or plants and animals are merged to create seeds that can be patented. The company then charges a premium for the seeds and requires farmers internationally to sign user contracts.

More than half of the U.S. soybeans and corn that make up roughly 70 percent of pre-packages grocery store items come from genetically engineered ingredients.

Recently, rBGH has been tested on catfish and tilapia to increase growth.

What’s Missing In Our Vitamins

This is a follow up to my previous post and was written by someone on my distribution list. It includes info on the nutrient forms in most vitamin/mineral formulas - If you are looking for an alternative to what is typically available, let me know and I will tell you how to get what I take, or look at the information in the previous post-Chris

You are not getting the nutrients you need from today's food. If it is NOT in the soil, it is NOT in your food.  And some wonder why their vitality and health has got up and went!  When certain minerals are now totally missing from our foods and others have dropped by 80%, no wonder America has dropped to 42% in the world in overall health and longevity.  Bottom line:  IF you aren't taking supplements in a food form, you are not getting what you need.  Synthetic vitamins have been shown to BLOCK certain enzyme reactions that are NEEDED and have been shown to be toxic (no wonder -they are made from petrochemicals)!
 

Keep in mind the following if you know supplementing is important but you think you will just go down to your local food store and buy a cheap USP (United States Pharmacopeia) vitamin... Most all common VITAMINS are SYNTHETIC and only 10% absorbed (at best). They are made from coal tar (i.e. a toxic petrochemical) and may also contain multiple unknown ingredients such as lead and arsenic from China and other countries (as now the majority of Vitamins A, E and C come from China and few to NO inspections are made of the facilities or containments in their end products). 

Regarding most mineral supplements....The large majority of MINERAL supplements on the market today are ground up rocks (the ionic ones are just more finely ground) and are extremely poorly-absorbed - if absorbed at all.  A study published in the Journal of Food Chemistry stated that, with the single exception of selenium, less than 10% of the synthetic minerals contained in the most popular brands of multivitamins were in a soluble bio-available form. 

Simply put, while synthetic vitamins and mineral salts may be inexpensive, it appears they do not provide effective support to bridging the nutritional gap between what we get in food and what our bodies require from it.  Consider the following:  Agnes Fay Morgan, Ph.D. reported in SCIENCE that animals on a synthetic vitamin-enriched diet died before animals fed an unprocessed diet. Dr. Paul Yanick states: "In summary, the use of synthetic vitamins jams cellular signals and stimulates false surges of energy." According to Dr. Bruce West, MD, whole-food sourced vitamins and phytochemicals are 100 TIMES more effective than regular vitamin and mineral products...even at mega-dosages. "

Big Pharma Pushes Drugs That Cause Conditions They Are Supposed to Prevent

It seems that every day you hear of some new infliction or syndrome that did not exist just a year ago. Also of interest is that in the last few years as drug companies have been marketing newer and better cholesterol drugs the level at which a person is considered to have high cholesterol is dropping. My wife's medical insurance sharply increased due to a recent cholesterol screen. Her levels are the same as they were last year and the year before, but the definition of what constitutes high cholesterol has changed. The doctor's recommendation was of course to offer a "great new drug that just came on the market". It has come to the point where we need to take charge of our own health care for it is apparent that the doctors, insurance companies, and the pharmaceutical manufacturers are merging into one amorphous entity.
